GEORGE TOWN, February 21 — A 48-year-old local man from Bayan Lepas was found dead after jumping off the Penang Bridge at KM 5.5 (Seberang Perai-bound) in the early hours of February 18. The Northeast District Police received an emergency report at approximately 2:50 AM from a witness who saw the man leap into the sea around 2:15 AM.
A search and rescue (SAR) operation was immediately launched, involving the Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) and other emergency response agencies. At 9:05 AM on February 19, the SAR team successfully recovered the victim’s body near the bridge pillars. The body was identified by family members and sent to Penang Hospital for a post-mortem.
With the recovery of the victim, the SAR operation was officially called off. The police expressed their gratitude to all agencies and members of the public who assisted in the operation.
