KUALA LUMPUR, February 26 – The Ministry of Economy is set to unveil the Natural Gas Roadmap in the second or third quarter of this year to accelerate investments and ensure the long-term sustainability of Malaysia’s RM52 billion natural gas industry. Minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli stated that the roadmap would address regulatory barriers, expand infrastructure such as regasification terminals and pipelines, and create high-value technical jobs to bolster the industry’s socioeconomic impact.
Speaking at the Malaysian Gas Symposium (MyGAS 2025), he emphasized the need for strong government policies to reassure financial institutions and attract greater investments. Rafizi also highlighted the critical role of natural gas in Malaysia’s energy transition, stating that projections indicate gas will contribute 56% of the country’s energy mix by 2050, surpassing renewables. While often viewed as a transitional fuel, he described gas as a “destination fuel” essential for meeting growing power demands and stabilizing energy supply.
However, declining natural gas reserves, particularly in Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah, pose significant challenges. To address this, Malaysia must prepare for increased liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports and implement enhanced gas market liberalization to secure supply, making regulatory reforms and infrastructure investments a national priority.
