GEORGE TOWN, February 28 – Penang has officially launched the No Plastic Bag Every Day Campaign 2025, marking a significant step toward environmental sustainability. The initiative, announced by State Housing and Environment Committee chairman Dato’ Seri Sundarajoo Somu at Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal, aims to eliminate plastic bags across the state, with a six-month educational period beginning March 1 before full enforcement on September 1, 2025.
The campaign applies to hypermarkets, supermarkets, convenience stores, fast food outlets, pharmacies, and other commercial establishments under Plastic Bag 2.0 regulations. To ease the transition, the state will distribute free reusable bags while also working toward a broader framework to phase out single-use plastics entirely. Sundarajoo urged businesses and residents to embrace sustainable habits, reinforcing Penang’s goal of becoming a low-carbon, eco-friendly state and a model for environmental stewardship in Malaysia.
