KUALA LUMPUR, February 28 – Business tycoon Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar Al-Bukhary has committed RM30 million to assist paddy farmers following the government’s announcement of a new floor price of RM1,500 per tonne, effective February 16. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim expressed gratitude for the contribution, highlighting Syed Mokhtar’s ongoing support through Bernas, which previously allocated RM60 million to aid farmers.
The new floor price, announced by Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, aims to boost farmers’ incomes, while the government will absorb RM150 million in production costs to maintain the price of local white rice at RM2.60 per kg. Anwar emphasized that this marks the second paddy price adjustment under the Madani Government, addressing a decade-long stagnation and reaffirming the administration’s commitment to farmers’ welfare.
