GEORGE TOWN, March 2 – The Penang Island City Council (MBPP) will implement a 50% increase in roadside parking fees starting March 3, marking the first adjustment in 11 years. Mayor Datuk A. Rajendran stated that the revision aims to prevent long-term parking abuse, as some motorists occupy spaces for up to 12 hours, making it difficult for others to find parking.
The new rates will increase from 40 sen to 60 sen per half-hour, while daily charges will rise from RM6 to RM8, though the monthly pass remains RM150. Payments must be made digitally via the Penang Smart Parking app. Additionally, MBPP is considering introducing time limits in high-demand areas to improve parking availability. The council is also working with developers to align private parking rates with public parking fees.
Plans are underway to develop a multi-storey parking facility at Weld Quay through an open tender process, along with other measures to ease congestion and create a more structured parking system. The last roadside parking fee hike was in 2014, when rates increased from 30 sen to 40 sen per half-hour.
