GEORGE TOWN, March 7 – The Consumers’ Association of Penang (CAP) has urged the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA) to take immediate action in resolving the country’s worsening coconut shortage. A market survey in Penang revealed growing concerns among traders over dwindling coconut supplies, which have driven prices up significantly.

Imported coconuts now cost RM4.00 each, while the price of coconut milk has surged from RM16.00 to RM20.00 per kilogram ahead of Ramadan. Despite FAMA’s commitment in December 2024 to increase coconut imports, CAP President Mohideen Abdul Kader emphasized that the situation remains unresolved. With demand set to rise during Ramadan, CAP is calling on FAMA and the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security to take swift measures to stabilize coconut supply and prevent further price hikes.
