GEORGE TOWN, March 12 — The Penang International Dragon Boat Regatta 2025 will once again take place at Straits Quay Marina from November 28 to 30, following its successful relocation last year due to low water levels at Teluk Bahang Dam. State Tourism and Creative Economy Committee Chairman Wong Hon Wai confirmed the decision, citing that the dam’s water capacity is currently at 55%, significantly lower than the 77% recorded during the same period in 2024.
Wong emphasized that the regatta is not just a sporting event but a celebration of Penang’s heritage and cultural significance, with dragon boat racing dating back to 1934 in the state. Since its first official race in 1956, the sport has grown in prominence, positioning Penang as a key hub for dragon boat racing in Malaysia. Last year’s event attracted around 100,000 participants and spectators, with an increase in international participation.
The 2025 competition will feature 250m and 400m races, along with a Tug of War event, welcoming teams across multiple divisions, including Premier Open, International Junior U24, and International Senior 40. Meanwhile, Wong also announced the winners of the Penang Chingay Parade Photography Competition, with Jeremy Chew, Ron Yeoh, and Ho Wai Lok each receiving RM688 for their outstanding captures of the cultural parade.
