KUALA LUMPUR, March 16 – Leading gig economy platforms, including Bolt, FastGig, foodpanda, GoGet, Grab, Halo Delivery, Kiddocare, Lalamove, and ShopeeFood, have released a joint statement following the Gig Workers Bill town hall on 19 February 2025. While commending the Malaysian government’s proactive stance, they expressed concerns that the current draft may not fully achieve its intended objectives.
Key areas requiring further refinement include the impact of a consultative council on operations, potential financial burdens from unclear social protection contributions, and risks of stifling industry growth. The platforms propose a nationwide feasibility study and regulatory sandboxing to ensure the Bill is practical, sustainable, and worker-friendly before its tabling in Parliament.
They reaffirm their commitment to working with the government to develop a balanced framework that safeguards gig workers while fostering industry innovation.
