GEORGE TOWN, April 4 – Penang’s water supply faces increasing strain as the effective capacities of Teluk Bahang Dam and Air Itam Dam have significantly declined due to low rainfall. As of March 31, 2025, Teluk Bahang Dam’s capacity stands at 47.3%, down 14.4% since January, while Air Itam Dam has dropped 21% to 55.7%, marking its lowest rainfall levels in eight years.

To mitigate this, Perbadanan Bekalan Air Pulau Pinang (PBAPP) has implemented water conservation measures, including limiting daily drawdowns and supplementing supply with treated water from the Sungai Dua Water Treatment Plant. With the inter-monsoon period underway, PBAPP, supported by the Penang State Government, plans to request cloud-seeding assistance from the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA) and the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) to restore water reserves.

PBAPP also urges 67,000 consumers in affected areas—including Teluk Bahang, Batu Ferringhi, Air Itam, and Farlim—to use water wisely until rainfall levels improve. Meanwhile, the Expanded Mengkuang Dam remains stable at 92.4%, ensuring a backup supply if needed. For water-saving tips, PBAPP advises consumers to visit www.pba.com.my.
