BUTTERWORTH, April 5 — In response to the recent gas pipeline explosion in Putra Heights, the Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP) will initiate discussions with Gas Malaysia Berhad and the Energy Commission (ST) to establish clearer guidelines for gas pipeline inspections within Seberang Perai.

Penang’s Local Housing, Town and Country Planning Committee chairman H’ng Mooi Lye stated the council aims to enhance safety oversight and explore mechanisms for periodic reporting from utility providers to better protect public infrastructure and residents.

Although gas pipeline monitoring is currently under the purview of the ST, MBSP is taking proactive steps to ensure compliance and future preparedness. H’ng added that while existing gas pipelines are included in the Seberang Perai Local Plan, new guidelines and standard operating procedures may be introduced.

He also addressed safety concerns near the Gelugor TNB power plant, assuring the public that deeply buried pipelines pose no immediate risk unless tampered with and that appropriate actions will be taken if any encroachment is found.
