BAYAN LEPAS, April 10 – Penang State Government, through the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (JPS) Penang, has launched two pioneering projects under the Penang Nature-Based Climate Adaptation Programme (PNBCAP) to strengthen climate resilience and mitigate flood risks.

The initiatives include the construction of a flood retention pond at Taman Lintang Nibong and the development of the Blue-Green Corridor along Sungai Keluang. These projects, supported by the Adaptation Fund via UN-Habitat, integrate sustainable engineering solutions such as an infiltration well system, pedestrian walkways, green spaces, and urban farming areas, enhancing both environmental sustainability and community engagement.

Additionally, the newly inaugurated Kampung Naran Pump House, a key component of the Sungai Tiram Flood Mitigation Plan, aims to reduce the frequency and impact of flooding in the area, particularly benefiting communities near the Penang International Airport.

With RM150 million allocated for high-impact flood control projects across the state, Penang continues to invest in innovative infrastructure that not only prevents floods but also fosters urban sustainability. These efforts reflect the government’s commitment to balancing development with ecological preservation for a more resilient future.
