KUALA LUMPUR, April 11 – The Consumers’ Association of Penang (CAP) has urged the government to establish a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) into the April 1 Putra Heights gas pipeline fire, citing the need for a thorough, independent investigation to determine the cause of the disaster and ensure preventive measures are implemented.

CAP raised concerns over safety protocol failures, the proximity of the pipeline to residential areas, and the effectiveness of emergency responses, stressing that only an RCI can ensure accountability, assess regulatory gaps, and provide policy recommendations to prevent future incidents.

The association also highlighted long-term consequences for victims, including medical needs, compensation, and environmental impacts, emphasizing that the tragedy must serve as a catalyst for stricter safety standards.
