GEORGE TOWN, April 11 – The Penang State Government has officially submitted nomination dossiers to UNESCOfor the inclusion of the Lion Dance and Chingay Parade in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The Lion Dance nomination is a collaborative effort between Malaysia and China, while the Chingay Parade is a joint submission by Malaysia and Singapore.
Penang State Executive Councillor for Tourism and Creative Economy, Wong Hon Wai, stated that these nominations will enhance global recognition for both traditional performances, with UNESCO’s decision expected by the end of 2026. The Lion Dance nomination was prepared with support from Malaysia’s National Heritage Department and China’s Department of National Heritage.
Meanwhile, the Chingay Parade, deeply rooted in Penang’s history since 1883, has evolved from a Chinese religious celebration into a major cultural tourism event. Penang, Johor, and Singapore have worked together to showcase Chingay’s significance as a symbol of community spirit and artistic heritage.
