PUTRAJAYA, April 15 — The ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) will hold its Special Meeting 1/2025 from April 8 to 10 in Penang, Malaysia, under the leadership of Malaysia’s Representative, Edmund Bon Tai Soon. The gathering will bring together all AICHR Representatives, including an observer from Timor-Leste, to discuss regional human rights priorities and responses to the recent earthquakes that devastated parts of Myanmar and Thailand.

Key discussions will include a historic interface with the ASEAN Senior Officials on the Environment (ASOEN) to finalise the ASEAN Declaration on the Right to a Safe, Clean, Healthy, and Sustainable Environment. The meeting will also advance Malaysia’s proposal for an ASEAN Declaration on the Rights to Peace and Development, aligning with the 2025 ASEAN Chairmanship theme of “Inclusivity and Sustainability”.
