KUALA LUMPUR, April 15 — Over 50 Chinese tech giants have co-developed a groundbreaking new cable standard, the General Purpose Media Interface (GPMI), aimed at replacing HDMI and DisplayPort by offering a unified, high-performance solution for both power and data transmission.
GPMI supports up to 192Gbps bandwidth and 480W of power through its Type-B connector — more than quadruple HDMI 2.1’s capabilities — and is engineered to handle demanding 8K video, gaming, and power-hungry devices with a single cable.

The GPMI comes in two variants: a Type-B connector for maximum performance, and a Type-C connector, which is USB-C compatible, delivering up to 96Gbps bandwidth and 240W of power. This makes it ideal for portable setups like gaming laptops, eliminating the need for separate power and display cables.
Backed by companies like Huawei, Hisense, BOE, TCL, and SHARP, GPMI also integrates HDMI-CEC-style remote functionality and has already received approval from the USB Association for its Type-C version. Its adoption outside China remains to be seen, but the potential for a single-cable media solution is gaining global attention.
