GEORGE TOWN, April 17 – The Penang State Executive Council has unanimously approved the renaming of Lebuhraya Bandar Cassia to Jalan Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi in tribute to Malaysia’s fifth Prime Minister, a proud son of Bayan Lepas whose contributions brought transformative development to the state.

Chief Minister YAB Chow Kon Yeow announced the decision today, citing Tun Abdullah’s instrumental role in major projects such as the Penang Second Bridge, which catalysed growth in Batu Kawan and led to the birth of Bandar Cassia. Tun Abdullah had officially named Bandar Cassia in 2004 and was pivotal in securing national-level support for its development.

Under his leadership, Penang also benefited from key infrastructure projects including the first expansion of the Penang International Airport (RM1 billion), the development of Penang Sentral (RM2.7 billion), Butterworth Outer Ring Road (BORR), and the Northern Corridor Economic Region (NCER). The state government aims to preserve his enduring legacy through this renaming initiative.

As a mark of respect, the state flag will be flown at half-mast this Friday, 18 April 2025, across all government and local authority buildings. The public, including private premises owners, are also encouraged to do the same in honour of Tun Abdullah’s immense service to Penang and Malaysia.
