PUTRAJAYA, April 19 — YTL Communications Sdn Bhd has been appointed by the Railway Asset Corporation (RAC) to build fibre optic infrastructure along 1,600 kilometres of Malaysia’s railway tracks, marking a major step in boosting the nation’s digital connectivity. Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook said the project, which spans from Padang Besar to Johor Baru and Tumpat, is expected to enhance digital reach while generating additional revenue for rail infrastructure upgrades and supporting KTMB operations.
Loke emphasized that the selection followed a competitive request-for-proposal (RFP) process, with YTL offering the highest returns, although the project remains non-exclusive. “This initiative reflects our commitment to transforming public infrastructure into a multidimensional growth engine—physically, digitally, and economically,” he said, adding that more network providers may be considered in future phases to expand the nation’s fibre optic coverage.
