KUALA LUMPUR, April 24 – Former Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Ramli Ngah Talib has been officially appointed as the ninth Yang Dipertua Negeri of Penang, effective May 1, 2025. The 84-year-old statesman received his instrument of appointment from His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, during a ceremony at Istana Negara.
At the same event, Ramli was also conferred the prestigious Seri Maharaja Mangku Negara (SMN) award, which carries the honorary title of “Tun.” Tun Ramli’s four-year term, in accordance with Article 1 of the Penang State Constitution, will run until April 30, 2029. He succeeds Tun Ahmad Fuzi Abdul Razak, who has served in the role since May 2021.
The ceremony was graced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, and other prominent dignitaries. With a distinguished political career that includes a 17-year tenure as the Menteri Besar of Perak, Tun Ramli brings extensive leadership experience to his new role as Penang’s head of state.
