GEORGE TOWN, April 29 — Penang has successfully completed its scheduled water supply interruption (SWSI) restoration efforts, marking a major milestone in strengthening the state’s water distribution system. Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow announced today that the achievement was made possible through the collaboration of all parties involved.
With 23 key water projects completed during the disruption period, significantly enhancing the pumping and distribution capacity from the Sungai Dua Water Treatment Plant — Penang’s largest and most critical facility. The final phase of restoration, involving 400 accounts at the end-of-line area of Gertak Sanggul in Southwest District, was completed at 6.45pm today after a longer-than-expected process to release trapped air in the pipelines.
Chow highlighted five major benefits achieved through SWSI April 2025, including increased daily treated water output to approximately 465,000 users, improved water pressure during high-demand seasons, reduced instability for highland and end-of-line areas, faster recovery after future supply disruptions, and the potential reduction of non-revenue water losses.
The Chief Minister expressed deep gratitude to Penang’s residents for their patience and understanding, and extended congratulations to the Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) staff, as well as thanks to state leaders, assemblymen, parliamentarians, council members, and supporting agencies for their vital roles in ensuring the successful completion of the restoration efforts.
