KUALA LUMPUR, May 11 — As Umno celebrates its 79th anniversary, party president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi urged members to avoid falling into a “who’s more radical” contest, calling instead for a return to centrist, solution-driven politics.
In his keynote speech at the World Trade Centre, Zahid emphasised the need for mature and rational leadership that reflects the people’s desire for stability, practical solutions, and a unified Malaysia. Zahid stressed that Umno must evolve beyond outdated narratives, warning that emotional politics could derail the party’s future and alienate younger voters.
Reflecting on the party’s support for the unity government, he said that decision was crucial to preserving Umno’s relevance and strength. “Our success in by-elections shows Malaysians want answers, not noise,” he said, calling on the party to embrace moderate, forward-looking values to remain a credible voice for the Malay community and the nation.
