GEORGE TOWN, May 12 — The Consumers’ Association of Penang (CAP) has condemned the recent brutal killings of three Borneo pygmy elephants, highlighting an alarming rise in elephant deaths linked to poaching, habitat loss, and human-wildlife conflict.
With only around 1,000 Bornean elephants remaining in the wild, as classified endangered by the IUCN Red List in June 2024, CAP urgently calls for stronger law enforcement, stricter monitoring, and the re-evaluation of infrastructure projects like the Pan Borneo Highway that threaten crucial habitats.
Without immediate and effective conservation efforts, these gentle giants face imminent extinction.
