KUALA LUMPUR, May 18 — Russian President Vladimir Putin has outlined ambitious plans for expanding energy cooperation with Malaysia, citing potential joint ventures in natural gas and the peaceful use of nuclear energy.

Speaking during a joint press conference with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in Moscow, Putin highlighted existing partnerships between Petronas and Russian energy giants Rosneft and Gazprom, while also pointing to increased Russian exports of oil products, coal, and agricultural goods to Malaysia, including halal-certified meat and dairy.

Putin praised Anwar’s visit as a clear signal of deepening bilateral ties, noting that both nations share a longstanding tradition of mutual respect and collaboration. He revealed that discussions between the two leaders covered a wide range of topics—from trade and energy to education and cultural exchanges—adding that there are around 700 Malaysians currently studying in Russia.

The Russian president also welcomed Malaysia’s engagement in BRICS activities under Russia’s presidency, citing Malaysia as one of the invited partner countries. Anwar’s four-day official visit, which began on May 13, marks a pivotal moment in Malaysia-Russia relations.

Putin stressed that both countries are well-positioned to further strengthen cooperation across strategic sectors, particularly as Malaysia holds the current Chairmanship of ASEAN. “We see a strong foundation and future in our partnership,” he said, affirming both governments’ commitment to sustainable development and regional dialogue in the Asia-Pacific.
