GEORGE TOWN, May 20 – Penang recorded a remarkable 218.86 per cent surge in tourist arrivals from mainland China in 2024, with 120,245 Chinese travellers arriving via Penang International Airport, compared to just 37,711 in 2023.
State Tourism and Creative Economy Executive Councillor Wong Hon Wai attributed this growth to expanded air connectivity — including seven new direct flight routes — and targeted digital promotions across popular platforms like Xiaohongshu. Wong highlighted efforts such as strategic collaborations with online travel agencies, chartered flights, and immersive familiarisation trips for Chinese influencers and media.
These initiatives have not only showcased Penang’s famed street food and heritage, but also introduced innovative tourism experiences like kebaya-themed tours and “durian tourism” packages. He affirmed Penang’s ongoing commitment to strengthening its appeal to Chinese tourists and enhancing the state’s international tourism footprint.
