KUALA LUMPUR, May 24 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today clarified that the proposal to raise the retirement age to 65 has not been discussed at the Cabinet level and must undergo thorough evaluation before any decision is made.

The idea, put forward by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said in her personal capacity, promotes the concept of “active ageing.” Anwar emphasized the importance of reviewing the proposal’s financial and employment implications before it can be formally considered.

“The idea deserves attention and consideration, but let the agencies involved discuss it first,” he said, following the launch of the Hadiah Bahasa 2025 award. The current mandatory retirement age stands at 60 for both civil servants and private sector employees, as stipulated under the Minimum Retirement Age Act 2012.
