GEORGE TOWN, May 26 – The Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) reported a modest increase in dam capacities on the island, with Teluk Bahang Dam at 49.4% and Air Itam Dam at 60.4%, thanks to substantial rainfall in catchment areas over the past 39 days.

However, CEO Dato’ Ir. Pathmanathan K. emphasized that despite the improvement, Penangites must remain committed to the 250 litres per capita per day (LCD) domestic consumption target for 2025 to ensure long-term water security, especially with the potential for dry seasons in early 2026.

With 45,895 water users in the Teluk Bahang area and 29,948 in Air Itam, PBAPP continues implementing measures such as dry weather controls and the Air Itam Dam Action Plan 2025, which includes pumping supplementary water from the Sungai Dua WTP.

While there is no immediate threat to supply, PBAPP cautions against complacency, citing climate change as a key concern. All residents are urged to adopt water-saving habits at home, such as using buckets instead of hoses for washing and watering, to help restore dam capacities to optimal levels.
