KUALA LUMPUR, May 29 — Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad has officially submitted his resignation as Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES), effective July 4, 2025. In a media statement, he cited his recent loss in the KEADILAN party elections as a key reason for stepping down and expressed his intent to focus on serving his constituents in Setiawangsa. He will be on leave starting May 29 until the effective date of resignation.
During his tenure—first as Minister of Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change, and later under NRES—Nik Nazmi spearheaded major reforms including the amendment of the Environmental Quality Act 1974, advancement of the National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plan (NBSAP), and significant steps in climate legislation. He expressed deep gratitude to public servants, his ministry team, and civil society for their support, and reaffirmed his commitment to public service outside the Cabinet.
