KUALA LUMPUR, May 30 – Tengku Zafrul bin Tengku Abdul Aziz, Malaysia’s Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry, has officially announced his resignation from UMNO, stepping down from all party positions including as Member of the Supreme Council, Chief of the Kota Raja Division, and ordinary party member.
In a statement issued today, Tengku Zafrul revealed that he has formally submitted his resignation letter to the UMNO leadership, citing a long period of reflection and consultation with colleagues within and outside the party—including the UMNO President—before making this significant decision.
Having joined UMNO in 1997, Tengku Zafrul described the move as a deeply personal and difficult choice, influenced by evolving considerations of compatibility and alignment with his current political aspirations. He expressed heartfelt gratitude to UMNO members and supporters who stood by him throughout his political career, acknowledging their support as an unforgettable part of his journey.
In the same statement, Tengku Zafrul also confirmed his intention to join Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), stating that he has informed PKR’s President and Secretary-General and will proceed with the standard membership application process. His transition marks a notable political shift and adds a high-profile figure to PKR’s growing roster amid the evolving Malaysian political landscape.
