GEORGE TOWN, June 3 — All gas and petroleum pipelines in Penang are subject to strict annual inspections and continuous monitoring to uphold safety standards, according to State Infrastructure, Transport, and Digital Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari.
Speaking in the state assembly today, Zairil said the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) carries out integrity-focused audits covering operations, maintenance, and technical compliance, with surprise checks also conducted on unpermitted installations.
He highlighted that the Peninsular Gas Utilisation (PGU) pipeline, which spans 42km across Penang and supplies gas from Kerteh, Terengganu, to the northern and southern regions, is a key component of the state’s energy infrastructure.
With rising numbers of operators audited—seven in 2022 to 19 so far this year—Zairil assured that Penang’s gas distribution system, including connections to major power stations, is maintained to the highest safety standards to ensure reliable and secure energy supply.
