GEORGE TOWN, June 4 – A significant infrastructure upgrade has been completed at the Temporary Hawker Site (TPS) in Lengkok Burma with the installation of a new roof structure, funded under the 2024 Projek Mesra Rakyat (PMR) initiative at a cost of RM100,000.
The project aims to enhance comfort and operational conditions for approximately 10 local food and beverage hawkers, offering improved shelter and safety for both vendors and patrons. The upgraded site, which houses stalls selling local favourites like wan tan mee, nasi ekonomi, char kuetiaw, and roti bakar, is an important economic and culinary hub for the Bukit Bendera community.
The project, carried out by contractor Mega Granite Enterprise, began in January 2024 and was completed in April 2025, including full roof replacement and structural improvements. Bukit Bendera MP Syerleena Abdul Rashid highlighted the initiative as part of broader efforts to strengthen local micro-entrepreneurs and improve urban infrastructure.
“Hawkers are the lifeblood of our city’s economy. Ensuring they have a safe, comfortable place to operate is essential to sustaining their livelihoods and supporting our vibrant food culture,” she said.
