GEORGE TOWN, June 8 – DAP Penang Chairman Steven Sim Chee Keong has acknowledged public feedback regarding the 5% property discount offered to Indian Muslim first-time homebuyers for unsold residential units in Penang.
Reaffirming DAP’s commitment to justice and fairness for all Malaysians regardless of race or religion, Sim stated that the matter has been discussed with Chief Minister YAB Chow Kon Yeow, who has agreed to bring the policy back for review and further deliberation at the upcoming State Executive Council (Exco) meeting.
The discount, introduced as part of a state-initiated intervention to address an overhang of 2,796 unsold residential units, was announced by State Housing and Environment EXCO, YB Dato’ Seri Sundarajoo Somu. The initiative encourages private developers to voluntarily provide a 5% discount to Indian Muslim first-time homebuyers for a one-year period.
The move is part of broader efforts to stimulate the housing sector while ensuring inclusivity. Importantly, it does not affect Bumiputera quotas or involve any state financial subsidies. While aimed at improving homeownership among communities with historically lower participation in the open market, the state government reaffirmed that all existing housing policies and incentives remain intact.
The review, prompted by public concerns, reflects Penang’s commitment to social equity, responsible governance, and a balanced, sustainable housing development agenda.
