GERIK, June 9 — A devastating road accident involving a bus carrying students from Sultan Idris Education University (UPSI) and a Perodua Alza claimed 15 lives early this morning along the East-West Highway near Tasik Banding. The bus, en route from Jerteh, Terengganu, to Tanjung Malim, Perak, was carrying 42 UPSI students returning to campus after the Aidiladha break.

Authorities confirmed that 13 victims died at the scene, while two others succumbed to injuries at the hospital. Four students were injured and are receiving treatment at Gerik Hospital. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim extended his condolences and instructed the Higher Education Ministry to coordinate support for victims’ families.

UPSI vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Md Amin Md Taff expressed deep sorrow and is currently at Gerik Hospital to support affected students. The university posted a mourning tribute on its social media, while investigations and emergency response efforts continue.
