KUALA LUMPUR, June 10 — Senator and Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Aziz has confirmed his resignation from UMNO and formally announced his application to join PKR, clarifying that the decision was made on his own accord and not linked to any potential by-election participation.
He emphasized that he does not support triggering unnecessary by-elections, which he believes burden public resources. In a statement issued upon returning from his Hajj pilgrimage, Tengku Zafrul expressed gratitude for the support received throughout his time in UMNO, especially from the leadership and grassroots members in Kota Raja.
He reaffirmed his intention to complete his term in the Dewan Negara until December 2025 and said he leaves his ministerial role to the discretion of the Prime Minister, pledging to continue serving the nation in any capacity required.
Tengku Zafrul stressed that his political shift was a personal and carefully considered decision, rooted in democratic principles. He asked for continued prayers and support as he embarks on this new chapter with renewed purpose following his spiritual journey in Mecca.
