GEORGE TOWN, June 12 — The 17th edition of the George Town Heritage Celebrations (GTHC 2025) returns from 5th to 7th July 2025 with a vibrant programme themed “Stories Behind Doors and Doorways”. Organized by George Town World Heritage Incorporated (GTWHI) in collaboration with 39 partners, the three-day event promises a rich journey into the personal and collective narratives that shape the city’s heritage.
The theme, symbolic of transformation and transition, invites communities and visitors alike to look beyond the physical architecture of George Town and into the lives, histories, and aspirations hidden behind its doors. GTWHI General Manager Dr. Ang Ming Chee noted that this year’s event aims to strengthen storytelling capacities and make heritage more accessible and engaging for all.

“This celebration is for everyone — whether you’re crafting a lantern, walking our streets, or discovering a forgotten shrine, you’ll leave with something meaningful,” she said. YB Wong Hon Wai, Penang State EXCO for Tourism and Creative Economy, emphasized the celebration’s evolution into a platform for deeper community expression and creative engagement. “Seventeen is an age of asking bold questions and pushing boundaries.
This celebration isn’t just about preserving walls — it’s about letting those walls speak,” he stated. He further affirmed the state’s commitment to cultural tourism as a pillar of Penang’s creative economy. Among this year’s highlights is the introduction of the Historic Building Open House on 7th July — a new element that invites the public to explore eight heritage sites through guided narratives led by trained community volunteers.

All eight buildings have benefited from GTWHI’s Repair Incentive Program, offering visitors a rare glimpse into their historical restoration and cultural significance. Other key events include Cultural Workshops on 5th July featuring 29 traditional arts and food experiences expecting 18,000 participants and the George Town Heritage Walk on 6th July, a 5km family-friendly walk through the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
With free entry to many experiences, the festival aims to inspire deeper public appreciation and participation in Penang’s living heritage.
