GEORGE TOWN, June 17 — The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) has issued a stern reminder to the public about the dangers of online investment scams following a recent case involving a 55-year-old retiree who lost RM827,120 to a fraudulent scheme.
The victim was lured by a Facebook advertisement promoting high returns through an app called “Freeman LTD,” later transferring funds across 22 transactions into multiple bank accounts between April and May 2025.
The scam was discovered when the victim failed to withdraw purported profits of over RM23 million displayed on the app. Penang Police Chief, CP Datuk Hamzah Ahmad, stressed the need for heightened public awareness and vigilance, especially when engaging with online investment opportunities.
He urged the public to verify any investment entity through Bank Negara Malaysia or the Securities Commission before committing funds. With investment fraud cases on the rise, authorities are calling on Malaysians to act as advocates of awareness within their communities and work collectively to combat the threat of online scams.
