KUALA LUMPUR, June 17 – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim warned that rising geopolitical tensions, retaliatory trade policies, and fragile supply chains are undermining global interconnectedness and destabilising established trade and economic systems.

Delivering the keynote address at the opening of Energy Asia 2025, he highlighted the growing divide in international cooperation, particularly in the energy and climate sectors, where strategic competition has overtaken collaboration.

Calling for an equitable energy transition across Asia, Anwar stressed the need for a robust financial architecture to drive renewable investments, citing Southeast Asia’s minimal share—just two per cent—of global clean energy spending in 2023.

He outlined Malaysia’s initiatives, including the Corporate Renewable Energy Supply Scheme (CRESS) and Green Technology Financing Scheme, and affirmed ASEAN’s commitment to regional integration through the ASEAN Power Grid.

Emphasising that energy security must encompass social justice and universal access, Anwar concluded that Asia’s journey to net zero must be inclusive, balancing renewable adoption with emissions-abated fossil fuels to ensure affordability and progress.
