GEORGE TOWN, June 25 — The Protect Karpal Singh Drive Action Committee (ProtectKarpal), representing residents from the Bandar Sri Pinang area, has called on Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow to reject the proposed open-air landfill waste recycling and reclamation project at the Jelutong Landfill.

In a meeting with the CM, the group voiced strong opposition to the plan, citing serious health and environmental risks including exposure to toxic gases, hazardous dust, and unacceptable noise levels. Chief Minister Chow acknowledged the health concerns raised and expressed openness to exploring safer, closed-system alternatives.

ProtectKarpal presented eight key demands, including a total rejection of the current proposal, marine sanctuary status for Middle Bank, and the commissioning of independent environmental and health impact assessments. The group emphasized that Penang’s future must be built on sustainable, science-based planning, not environmentally regressive development.
