KUALA LUMPUR, June 27 – The Consumers’ Association of Penang (CAP) has urged the government to urgently implement comprehensive road safety reforms—including a ban on late-night express bus travel—following the devastating crash on the East-West Highway near Tasik Banding, Gerik, which claimed 15 young lives.
CAP highlighted the dangers of overnight bus journeys due to driver fatigue and possible stimulant misuse, and called for stricter enforcement of safety regulations, including mandatory dashboard cameras, seatbelt sensors, and safeguards against tampered speed limiters.
In addition, CAP emphasised the need for improved road conditions, regular mental health assessments for drivers, and the establishment of a Royal Commission of Inquiry to address the alarming rise in fatal accidents involving heavy vehicles.
