GEORGE TOWN, July 11 — Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow has urged Putrajaya to urgently reassess and strengthen its negotiation strategy with the United States following the planned imposition of a 25 per cent tariff on Malaysian exports beginning August 1.
Speaking at the launch of the Penang Chip Design Academy, Chow emphasised that Malaysia must present a more compelling case to protect local industries, jobs, and long-term economic stability, warning that the current approach may not be sufficient.
Chow also appealed to manufacturers considering relocation to reconsider, noting that uncertainties in new markets could pose equally significant challenges. He acknowledged the tariff’s impact varies across sectors but stressed the need for national and state-level resilience.
“Penang will continue enhancing our competitiveness through streamlined approvals, ready industrial lands, and strong talent pipelines,” he said, adding that while other countries may enjoy lower tariffs, Malaysia must double down on its strengths to remain attractive to global investors.
