GEORGE TOWN, July 12 — Bayan Baru MP Sim Tze Tzin and Rapid Bus Acting CEO Ku Jamil Zakaria joined a special media ride-along today to highlight a new on-demand van service aimed at solving Penang’s last-mile public transport issues.
The initiative offers a free, app-based ride service that connects residential areas to nearby bus stops and transit hubs—part of a broader push to reduce traffic congestion and encourage behavioural shifts away from private car use.
Sim said the new service was a “timely solution” as the state prepares for long-term infrastructure projects like the LRT, which may cause temporary disruptions. “We always hear complaints about traffic and blame being placed on various authorities, but this on-demand service gives people an immediate and practical alternative,” he said.
Adding that it’s especially useful for students, office workers, and families heading to schools, markets, or train stations. He urged the public to try it out and support efforts to achieve Penang’s goal of 40% public transport usage by 2030.
Ku Jamil noted that the programme is still in its early stages but has already expanded, with more vehicles on the road and increasing ridership. “We are solving the last-mile problem, and the response has been very encouraging. With more awareness, we hope this service becomes a regular part of people’s daily commute,” he said.
