GEORGE TOWN, July 19 — Pulau Tikus state assemblyman Joshua Woo has congratulated Datuk Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Salleh on his appointment as Malaysia’s new Chief Justice, while calling for a long-overdue review of judicial remuneration.

Joshua commended Wan Ahmad Farid’s proven integrity, notably his voluntary recusal from a 2022 high-profile case involving former Prime Minister Najib Razak due to prior political ties — a move that underscored his respect for judicial impartiality.

Woo said that with Wan Ahmad Farid stepping into the nation’s top judicial role, it is timely for the government to reassess judges’ pay and benefits, which have remained unchanged for more than a decade. “

Judicial remuneration is not merely about pay — it is vital for safeguarding the integrity of the judiciary,” Joshua stressed, adding that competitive compensation helps insulate judges from undue influence and attracts top legal talent to the bench.
