GEORGE TOWN, July 23 – Rising water consumption in Penang has prompted Perbadanan Bekalan Air Pulau Pinang (PBAPP) to increase treated water production to an average of 1,213.3 million litres per day (MLD) in June 2025, up from 1,208 MLD in 2024.
This surge aims to meet the growing demand, which reached an average daily usage of 899.2 MLD last month, compared to 870 MLD last year. Despite these efforts, PBAPP continues to receive reports of low water pressure during peak hours in high ground and end-of-line areas in Seberang Perai Tengah, Seberang Perai Selatan, and Daerah Barat Daya.
PBAPP CEO Dato’ Ir. Pathmanathan K. stated that the utility is intensifying water supply engineering responses, including optimising production across all 10 treatment plants, postponing upgrades, and conducting supply audits.
Water conservation efforts are also being emphasized, with consumers urged to support the 250 litres per capita per day usage target. PBAPP is “defending” dam reserves until expected rainfall in September and pursuing long-term solutions like the Water Contingency Plan 2030 and the Perak-Penang Water Project.
