PETALING JAYA, July 26 — The government will initiate discussions with all political parties on the proposal to limit the prime minister’s tenure to two terms or a maximum of 10 years.
According to law and institutional reform minister Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, the move aims to reach a preliminary consensus on the constitutional amendment, which also involves the discretion of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong in appointing a prime minister.
Azalina noted that a study on the matter was presented to the Cabinet in March, and the proposal now requires broad consultation, including with East Malaysian parties and state governments.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had earlier voiced support for the two-term limit but stressed the need for bipartisan agreement before any changes to the Federal Constitution are made.
