PUTRAJAYA, July 28 — A special trilateral meeting hosted by Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in Putrajaya has resulted in a breakthrough agreement for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire between Cambodia and Thailand.
The high-level dialogue, co-organised by the United States and attended by Chinese representatives, brought together Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thailand’s Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai in a renewed effort to de-escalate the escalating border conflict.
Following extensive talks, both leaders agreed to enforce a ceasefire effective at midnight on July 28 and resume communications at all ministerial levels. A series of follow-up meetings — including one between regional military commanders on July 29.
And a General Border Committee meeting in Cambodia on August 4 — have been scheduled to solidify peace efforts and foster transparency. As ASEAN Chair, Malaysia has offered to coordinate an observer mission to monitor the ceasefire’s implementation, reflecting the region’s commitment to stability and dialogue.
The outcome was hailed as a vital first step toward restoring peace, with support from the United States, including direct engagement by President Donald Trump, and active participation by China in promoting diplomatic solutions.
