KUALA LUMPUR, July 30 — The government is considering a legal requirement for all artificial intelligence (AI)-generated content to be labelled as “AI generated” under the upcoming Online Safety Act 2024, which is expected to be enforced by the end of this year.
Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said the move aims to curb the spread of scams, defamation, and deepfakes on social media platforms. Speaking at an AI-themed forum in Bangsar, Fahmi highlighted the urgent need for regulation amid growing misuse of AI technologies.
He noted that while some platforms have voluntarily adopted AI-content labelling, Malaysia may push for regional adoption of the practice through Asean cooperation. The minister also urged Parliament and all ministries to take responsibility in shaping AI governance.
While emphasising that AI must support—not replace—human judgement and creativity.
