KUALA LUMPUR, July 31 — Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming reaffirmed that local authorities do not issue hawker or small trader licences to foreign nationals, in line with existing by-laws.

Responding in the Dewan Rakyat, he emphasised that such business permits are exclusively for Malaysians, with local councils also disallowing foreigners from working under hawker licences.

Nga added that the government aims to prioritise locals by offering subsidised rental rates and business opportunities. He warned that any violations will result in stern action, including fines, licence revocations, or business closures.

However, foreigners may still be employed in other licensed businesses if they hold valid work permits.
