PHNOM PENH, August 2 – Cambodia has accepted Thailand’s proposal to shift upcoming General Border Committee (GBC) talks to Malaysia from August 4 to 7, as both countries work to resolve a deadly border dispute.
The decision follows a ceasefire agreement brokered in Putrajaya on July 28, aimed at easing rising tensions that erupted into armed clashes on July 24. Cambodia also suggested the inclusion of Malaysia, the United States, and China as observers at the talks.
With an 817-kilometre undemarcated border at the core of the conflict, both sides are expected to seek a diplomatic path forward under Malaysia’s facilitation as ASEAN Chair.
