KUCHING, August 4 — Malaysia could begin adopting nuclear energy within the next 10 years, pending public acceptance, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said today.
Speaking after officiating an event in Kuching, Fadillah, who also leads the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA), said feasibility studies are ongoing for potential sites in Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah, where energy demand remains high and hydropower is limited.
The studies, coordinated by MyPower Corporation, will evaluate technology options, safety, financing, environmental impact, and cooling requirements near water sources. Fadillah said Malaysia is also exploring newer technologies like small modular reactors (SMRs).
With planned visits to countries including South Korea, Japan, and the United States to identify the safest and most cost-effective solutions aligned with International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) guidelines.
