KUALA LUMPUR, August 5 — The Penang State Government has welcomed the Ministry of Works’ decision to submit a preliminary application for the long-awaited upgrade of the Federal Route FT006 from Bayan Lepas to Teluk Kumbar, transforming the current two-lane road into a four-lane dual carriageway.
Chief Minister YAB Chow Kon Yeow, in a statement from Parliament, highlighted that the proposal — covering design and land acquisition — has been included in Rolling Plan 1 of the 13th Malaysia Plan (RMKe-13) for consideration by federal agencies. The Chief Minister emphasized the urgency of the project, which has been requested since the 11th Malaysia Plan, citing worsening traffic congestion in the rapidly developing Southwest District.
The Ministry of Works confirmed that the proposal spans Section 20.00 to Section 23.00 and aims to boost road capacity, ease traffic flow, and strengthen transport connectivity in the area. Approval status will be announced following the upcoming federal budget, pending prioritization and financial availability.
