CYBERJAYA, August 10 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called the rapid and peaceful ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia one of ASEAN’s proudest achievements, crediting the trust and cooperation among member nations for the breakthrough.

Speaking at the 58th ASEAN Day celebration, Anwar lauded the unprecedented speed of the truce, achieved through direct engagement between both countries and backed by Malaysia’s mediation efforts as ASEAN Chair.

He also acknowledged support from the US and China, noting their logistical assistance, while emphasizing the ceasefire was ultimately brokered within ASEAN’s framework. With tensions cooling between Thailand and Cambodia, Anwar said Myanmar now poses the next major challenge.

Efforts are underway to negotiate a ceasefire and resume dialogue, with Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia set to send a joint delegation soon. Anwar also highlighted economic priorities ahead of the ASEAN Summit in October, including increasing intra-regional trade and energy connectivity.

Reflecting on ASEAN’s 58-year journey, he emphasized that the bloc’s continued relevance hinges on unity, vision, and the collective will to confront evolving regional challenges.
