KUALA LUMPUR, August 10 – PLUS Malaysia will begin public trials of a new high-speed, barrier-free toll system in October using Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology. The system, similar to Singapore’s Electronic Road Pricing (ERP), will first roll out along the Hutan Kampung to Sungai Dua stretch in Penang and expand to 13 toll plazas covering 35 lanes.
Supported by a new digital platform, JustGo, this pilot marks Malaysia’s first major step toward adopting the nationwide Multi-Lane Fast Flow (MLFF) toll system by 2027. With ANPR, high-definition cameras scan vehicle number plates and automatically deduct tolls via linked e-wallets, debit, or credit cards — no stopping or tapping required.
Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi, who personally tested the system, confirmed its speed and accuracy, noting that users can use any toll lane without registration fees. The system also boasts enhanced fraud detection by cross-verifying plates with vehicle models, helping flag cloned or mismatched registrations.
Developed entirely by local highway industry experts and funded without government expenditure, the ANPR system promises to ease congestion, improve toll efficiency, and offer a seamless driving experience for Malaysian motorists. Future phases are expected to remove all physical toll barriers, enabling fully open-road tolling across the PLUS network.
